Seaside Film Event

Let’s get together! These times call for positivity, awareness and a sense of community more than ever. That’s why we’ve teamed up with the Holland Surf Association and created a (surf) film event in our hometown Scheveningen, Holland’s biggest surf hub.

Our team has carefully selected a range of recently released films, which are making their Dutch premiere. Expect (surf) documentaries paying tribute to curiosity, adventure and humanity.

Meet the makers, enjoy drinks and good chats!

THE RED ISLAND presented by Oxbow (20 min)

A film that tells the story of 6000 kilometres of coastline, empty line-ups, local women’s surfing and the pioneers who explored Madagascar. Basque surfer Kepa Acero is drawn to the island, and when a solid swell pops up on the charts, he and surf buddies Natxo Gonzalez and Miquel Blanco make the call. With the help of surf pioneer Blair Rogers, they score dreamy waves and soak up a culture just as rich as the surf. Directed by John Aspuru.

BACKROADS, THE RIGHT WRONG TURN – surf expedition Ireland (18 mins)

This short documentary by José González beautifully celebrates the stunning landscapes and awe-inspiring waves of Ireland’s Northwest while highlighting the deep connections formed through a shared passion for surfing.

The film chronicles the adventures of surfers Hanno from Germany, Sander from the Netherlands, and Robin from Switzerland. Everyday surfers who have found a second home in Ireland’s warm communities. Their quest for the perfect waves takes them through peat bogs and narrow roads while facing harsh weather. It captures the raw allure of Ireland’s coast, serving as an ode to exploration, friendship, and a shared passion.

THE GRANNY GROMMETS (9 mins)

In the ocean, age is just a number. Every Friday morning at a popular beach in Albany, Western Australia, a group of older women, between 50 and 80, meet to hit the ocean with their bodyboards. Rain or shine, they zip up each other’s wetsuits and walk down to the cold water. They spend the morning in the line-up, giggling, screaming, laughing and going over the falls. They call themselves ‘The Granny Grommets’:

“As you get older, you tend to be invisible. You get a bit disregarded. With this group, we’re all the same… older… and never disregard each other.”

THE BIG SEA – Dutch premiere + QA (75 min)

A thought-provoking and groundbreaking documentary, showcasing the power that communities and individuals can have. The surf industry, as we know it, is the green, clean dream, but it also has a dirty secret. Turns out, we have a toxic addiction.

From filmmakers Lewis Arnold and Chris Nelson, the award-winning independent documentary exposes surfing’s hidden links to ‘Cancer Alley’ and the devastating impact of Neoprene. Through the lens of surfing and unwrapping issues of greenwashing, social justice and environmental racism, this life and death tale of two seemingly unconnected communities explores the power we have as individuals to effect change.

Neoprene wetsuits are just the tip of the iceberg – it’s used in everything from cars to fashion, but natural rubber alternatives quite literally grow on trees. What price are you willing to pay for your leisure time?

A Q&A with the makers, moderated by Ronald de Leeuw, will follow directly after the film.

SEE YOU THERE!
